Continuous Insulin Infusion Program for Children and Adolescents (The Pump)
The treatment of diabetes has evolved from just one or two injections per day to multiple injections or constant insulin infusion through an insulin infusion pump, often referred to as "The Pump." The reason for this change is that the goal of therapy is to keep blood sugars as close to normal as possible, thus alleviating complications associated with high blood sugar and non compliance. The advantages of "The Pump" are to increase flexibility of lifestyle while improving blood sugar control.
Miami Children's Hospital has designed a program to help you and your child make the transition from injections to the pump. The program includes a three day home acclimation period to become more familiar with the features of the pump. After this home trial, there will be a short hospital stay of less than 24 hours. During this hospital stay you will be provided with individualized education and instruction on carbohydrate counting and proper insulin adjustment. There will be various teaching sessions during your short admission. We will ask you to fax or call results of your child's daily testing for a two week period after the pump is started.
This program is specifically designed to be less intrusive in your lifestyle and get you and your child back into your routine as soon as possible. It can also be modified if need be, if you are traveling abroad.
